Tamara Goehler and Stephen Gray on the Gulf near Marco, accompanying the laboratory that does the monthly water testing for Marco Island.
Water quality is a top priority for the Gray-Goehler Team. Living on the canals, we see the problem firsthand, and we are deeply attuned to the concerns of our residents. The residents have made it clear that this issue is of tremendous importance, and whatever matters to the residents is vital to us.
We have been diligently working with experts. We have spent hours in water quality workshops, attended a Waterways Advisory Committee meeting, toured the wastewater treatment plant, and participated - by boat - in the monthly water testing off Marco Island. We are currently researching how other communities have successfully addressed similar water quality challenges.
It’s time to move beyond talk and take decisive action. Clean, healthy waterways are essential. That being said, it is critical that when we act, we take the right action.
As we move toward election day, you’ll hear from some self-appointed experts who claim to know the true source of the problems and the only good solutions. We are aware that some of the loudest voices may stand to gain from their proposed solutions or be personally motivated to dismiss other viable options. We need leaders who are truly objective, clear-headed, and open to the most effective and cost-efficient solutions. While we are leaving no stone unturned, we are not going to research indefinitely. We are committed to taking the right action as soon as that path becomes clear.
Thank you for staying informed on this critical issue. Please help us spread the word that we care deeply about water quality and keeping Marco a wonderful place to live.
GRAY-GOEHLER: YOUR MARCO ISLAND WATER QUALITY CANDIDATES
On Monday, August 26, we toured the Marco Island Wastewater Treatment plant, after which manager Jeff Poteet gave an in depth presentation on wastewater treatment.
The presentation was in depth and very informative: we recommend it to all residents who are concerned about the role that reuse water may play in our water quality problems.
In both July and August, we rose before dawn and boarded a boat, then headed out on the Gulf to accompany the laboratory that does the City's monthly water testing. We learned about how the water is tested, and learned about the locations chosen for testing, and how the levels of nutrients compare from one location to another. That information is essential to determining the potential sources of our water quality issues.
